Certificate Presentation Evening

It was wonderful to welcome back our students to our Certificate Presentation Evening and see them rewarded for all their hard work.

Certificate Evening is the pinnacle of our year and everyone looks forward to welcoming pupils to this event.  It is wonderful to see hard work rewarded and those pupils who have gone above and beyond receive extra recognition and awards.

This year’s guest was Phil Brown, who is a Commonwealth 400 metre Bronze medallist and UK 400 metre record holder.  It was his “knack” of securing medals on the Anchor Leg of the relay race that people remember Phil for and so it was, at the LA84 Games that the team secured an Olympic Silver Medal.

Phil retired from World Class Athletics in the early 90s and embarked upon a new career as a Development Worker for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.  He became Director for Central England enriching the lives of 48,000 participants with 1000 young people attending Gold Award Ceremonies at St James Palace each year.

Our pupils’ latest achievements and our current Great Barr Academy results reflect our ethos for excellence perfectly.  Whilst we adopt a philosophy for personal progression and achievement through class and home learning tasks, we team this with a challenging academic, sporting and performing arts curriculum to maximise opportunities and enhance the educational experience further.

In 2018 we have seen an improvement in the percentage of students achieving a strong pass (grade 5 or above) in English and Mathematics.  We have celebrated outstanding results in the separate sciences with 90% of students achieving a grade 4 or above in Chemistry, 90% of students achieving a grade 4 or above in Physics and 95% of students achieving a grade 4 or above in Biology.  100% of students achieved Dance BTEC and 100% of students entered for French achieved a grade 4 or above with 70% in Spanish.

A more detailed summary of our KS4 results can be found here → Provisional GCSE 2018 Performance Data

This year’s event was a joyous occasion an a testament to the hard work put in by our wonderful pupils and teachers.

Congratulations everyone!  You have done yourself and the school proud!
