Senior Leadership Team

Introducing our Senior Leadership Team

Mrs I Abrahams – Headteacher
Mrs I Abrahams became Headteacher in June 2015 but she has had a long association with the Academy starting in 1986 when she joined the Academy as a Newly Qualified Teacher of Religious Studies. Within a very short period of time, she had been promoted to Head of Department.   She left in 1992 to develop her career elsewhere but returned to us in 2008 as Deputy Head Teacher (Teaching & Learning).

Mr A Williams – Deputy Head Teacher (Pastoral & Designated Safeguarding Lead)
Mr Williams joined the Academy in 2004 as a Newly Qualified Science Teacher having already had a very successful career in the Financial Services sector.  He has previously held the post of Assistant Head Teacher (KS3).

Dr J Bartlett – Deputy Head Teacher (Achievement and Data, leading Maths)
Dr Bartlett joined the Academy in September 2015.   She is author of a number of key books on best practice in the teaching of Maths and on Assessment for Learning.

Mrs J Garvey – Director of Sixth Form 
Mrs Garvey joined the Academy in 2012 as an Advanced Skills Teacher in Science, having previously worked in a variety of settings as an Advanced Skills Teacher as well as a Specialist Leader in Education.   She has also been a Lead Practitioner for the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust.   Since joining the Academy she became a Progress Leader for Brunel Mini School before becoming Director of Sixth Form.

Mr L Barker – Assistant Head Teacher (KS4)
Mr Barker joined the Academy in 2007 as a Newly Qualified English Teacher and was very quickly promoted through the department as KS3 Coordinator, Advanced Skills Teacher, and then more recently as Director of English.  He has previously also led on Academy Literacy and Able Learner Strategies.

Mrs J Finlay – Assistant Head Teacher (Pastoral)
Mrs Finlay joined the Academy in 1994 as a Newly Qualified PE and Dance Teacher.  She very quickly developed her career through the pastoral teams and led the former Ludlow House for many years.  Prior to her promotion to the Leadership Team, she was our Head of Inclusion and SENCO.

Mrs D Allen – Assistant Head Teacher (Teaching and Learning)  
Mrs Allen joined the Academy in 2008 as an Advanced Skills Teacher in Religious Studies and leading on the Learn to Learn curriculum.  In her previous school she was Head of a successful Religious Studies Department and then moved into Pastoral and became Head of Year.  In 2003 she gained Advanced Skills Teacher Status.  Whilst in the academy she has promoted a program called Progress First and led and organised whole school PSHE and Personal Development days.

Mrs M Hunt – Assistant Head Teacher (Curriculum) 
Since joining the Great Barr Academy community in 2001 Mrs Hunt has worked passionately within a number of roles.  Her first love being that of a Drama Teacher and her biggest achievement to date being able to establish our hugely successful Performing Arts Faculty.  Mrs Hunt is now looking forward to the challenge of shaping the curriculum for future generations of Great Barr Students.                                        .
