Almost every year since 1974, we have run the ‘Shropshire Summits Challenge’ on or around the longest day of the year. A weekend residential (camping!) trip, the challenge involves getting up at 1am, heading out to the starting point in the glorious Shropshire countryside, starting to walk at about 3.30am and, by sunset, aiming to have completed the 35-mile course which includes climbing 6 summits. The challenge fosters team-working and leadership skills, focus and determination to succeed and an appreciation of our remarkable natural environment. The young people who complete the challenge are changed by it and carry away from it an enormous sense of achievement. Oh, and it’s a lot of fun, too!
