The Department and the Role:

Science is a strong, stable, firmly established department which achieves good results and has an excellent reputation. Being a large department, our Science teachers primarily teach their specialist subject though teachers who can teach up to GCSE in two specialisms are preferred.

In our last inspection in July 2016, OFSTED said that “Attainment and progress in science are very strong at key stage 3 and well above the national average at key stage 4.” Past reports have praised the quality of teaching in Science.

The Science Department delivers a diverse range of examination courses:

• GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Combined Science (Trilogy).
• A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science

At the top of our agenda is challenging, well structured, engaging and innovative teaching and learning in which pupils make measurable progress in every lesson and are aware of what they need to do to take the next step in their learning. Our team of Leading Practitioners support staff in their continuous professional development and disseminate good practice. Three of our Leading Practitioners are Science specialists.

The Candidate:

Applications welcome from experienced Science teachers with a track record of rapid pupil progress or from potential NQTs.

A strong specialism in Chemistry would be an advantage though all specialisms are welcome.

We have an NQT induction programme which is considered to be an exemplar of good practice. This is an excellent place for an outstanding Science Teacher to develop their career.

Great Barr Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS check is required for all successful applicants.
