Salary: £22,917 to £38,633

Required for: January 2019

Closing date for applications: 19 November 2018

The Candidate:

For this post, which will not involve teaching GCSE or A Level, we are prepared to consider applications from candidates who have QTS but who are not necessarily secondary trained Science specialists; for example, secondary trained PE teachers who have a Sports Science degree or primary trained teachers who have a Science degree. One of our PE Teachers currently teaches half a timetable of Science and is an excellent Science teacher so we know it’s possible. We are prepared to offer support and coaching to enable a candidate who is already a strong classroom practitioner to bridge the gap.

Applications are also welcome from experienced Science teachers with a track record of rapid pupil progress and, of course, from potential NQTs.

We have an NQT induction programme which is considered to be an exemplar of good practice. This is an excellent place for an outstanding Science Teacher to develop their career.

Although this is a permanent vacancy, we may want to make an offer of a fixed term contract in the first instance to give both us and the candidate the opportunity to assess the suitability of the arrangement, particularly where the candidate is converting from a different specialism.

The Department and the Role:

Science is a strong, firmly established department which achieves good results and has an excellent reputation. Our children enjoy their Science lessons.

In our last inspection in July 2016, OFSTED said that “Attainment and progress in science are very strong at key stage 3 and well above the national average at key stage 4.” Past reports have praised the quality of teaching in Science.

The Science Department delivers a diverse range of examination courses:

• GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Combined Science (Trilogy).
• A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science

At the top of our agenda is challenging, well structured, engaging and innovative teaching and learning in which pupils make measurable progress in every lesson and are aware of what they need to do to take the next step in their learning. Our team of Leading Practitioners support staff in their continuous professional development and disseminate good practice. Three of our Leading Practitioners are Science specialists.
